Sam Galsworthy and Fairfax Hall, founders of Sipsmith, originally set out to make the best gin in the world. That mission, commitment and progress were the reasons Beam Suntory—the world's third largest alcoholic beverage company—acquired the craft brand in 2016.
According to Sustainable Brands , once they got far enough along their goal, sustainability became a growing priority for Galsworthy and Hall. Although they felt they were a little late to the sustainability agenda, they were determined to apply the same high standards to their products.

From the beginning, Beam Suntory supported Sipsmith's founders' decision to pursue certification as a framework for integrating sustainable practices into their business. This approach is ideal for companies that want to involve their workers in a new mission, as it shows commitment from the top.
When we studied the BIA, we stepped away as a management team and realized that we needed to bring in people from across the company to represent the five areas of the assessment.
We needed permission from Beam Suntory to change the bylaws, and we wouldn't have gotten it if they hadn't supported us.

Sipsmith's Kaizen (continuous improvement) team had worked hard to complete the B Impact Assessment (BIA) and improve their score. They were below 75 points and stuck, so in August 2020 they contacted the sustainability experts at Seismic .
The Sipsmith Challenge
Seismic consulted with all of Sipsmith's different departments and conducted a quick review of their responses to the BIA, to determine what else they could provide as evidence that aligned with B Lab requirements. The Kaizen team worked with Seismic to identify additional improvements for the score beyond the BIA threshold of 80 points.
